Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply original price by (1 − discount rate). For 30% off $150: 150 × (1 − 0.30) = 150 × 0.70 = $105. Savings = $45. Mental shortcut: 10% off = divide by 10; 25% off = divide by 4; 50% off = divide by 2.
How do I find the discount percentage?
Discount% = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100. Item marked $200, on sale for $140: (200 − 140) ÷ 200 × 100 = 60 ÷ 200 × 100 = 30% off.
How do I calculate price after multiple discounts?
Apply each discount to the running price, not the original. 20% off then 10% off a $100 item: after first discount = $80; after second = $80 × 0.9 = $72. Total savings = $28 (28%), not 30%. Discounts compound multiplicatively.
